Special Bike Valets in May

Throughout Rideshare‘s Bike Month we’ll be traveling around San Luis Obispo County to set up our free Bike Valet service at a number of Farmers’ Markets. Normally we set up on Thursday evenings at the Downtown Farmers’ Market in SLO, but thanks to the generosity of The SLO County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) we’ll be able to park bikes countywide this month. This is a fantastic opportunity to leave your car at home, grab your bicycle and pedal down to enjoy the sights, sounds, flavors and scents of your local Farmers’ Market.

What is Bike Valet and how does it work?

Our Bike Valet is our secure bike parking service, designed to encourage everyone to ride bicycles to community events. With over 37,000 bikes parked, we are experts at protecting your ride.

The Bike Valet works just like a regular valet service.

  1. Each rider is given a check tag that matches the tag attached to their bike.
  2. The bike is carefully parked in our secure lot.
  3. To retrieve a bike, the user hands in the check tag and the bike is returned.
  4. Easy peasy!

Light Up SLO County

The San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club (SLOBC) and the San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition are using Rideshare’s Bike Month and the region’s bicycle and pedestrian safety campaign, #LetsGetVisible, to kick-off a unique bike safety program, Light Up San Luis Obispo County!

The SLOBC and the Bicycle Coalition have partnered to purchase a supply of bicycle lights that have been provided, LightUpSLOCountyLaw440without cost, to all of our local law enforcement agencies. Patrol officers will have the opportunity to give a free set of lights to any person riding a bicycle at night without the legally required lighting equipment. SLOBC President Will Benedict said, “This effort will help cyclists be lawful and more visible at night and greatly improve safety for all users of our roadways.”

Cal Poly Chief of Police George Hughes said, “This program will give our police officers a positive way to encourage students to comply with bicycle lighting requirements on and around our campus.”

“The community support for Bike Month is overwhelming”, said Stephanie Hicks, Program Manager for SLO Regional Ride Share. “Light Up San Luis Obispo County”, in conjunction with Bike Month activities and the region’s new bicycle and pedestrian safety campaign #LetsGetVisible underscores our region’s commitment to safe roadways for all users.

Participating agencies include the Police Departments of Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, CHP, Cal Poly PD, Cuesta College PD, Grover Beach, Morro Bay, Paso Robles, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department.

The SLOBC, founded in 1971, is a non-profit organization that promotes safe and legal bicycle riding for recreation and transportation. For more information about the club and our activities, please visit our website at www.slobc.org and our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/slobc.org

Meet the Winemaker

A Delicious Benefit for the Bike Coalition

The Central Coast is truly special in so many ways. We have great places to bicycle, an abundance of mouthwatering local wines and a fantastic variety of world-class cuisine using locally produced fruits, vegetables, meats and seafood.

However, whether you commute to work, take long distance road rides or bunny hop the trails on your mountain bike, you know that there is still a long way to go to connect our towns, to improve our roads and trails countywide, and to transform SLO County into a more bike friendly place in general.

Formed 14 years ago in 2001, the Bicycle Coalition is always looking for ways to make SLO County an even better place to bike. During Bike Month we’re joining forces with two local bike-friendly businesses, Peloton Cellars and Windows on the Water, to do just that.

Why? Because both of these locally owned businesses actively support our mission to improve the quality of life in SLO County through bicycle advocacy, education and inspiration. Aside from their year-round support for bikes, both of these businesses are taking the opportunity of May’s Meet The Winemaker evening to spread the word about the SLO County Bicycle Coalition.

We invite you to join The Bike Coalition on May 8th from 5 – 7 PM at Windows on The Water in Morro Bay for one of their dependably delicious Meet the Winemaker evenings. Bill and Trish Kesselring of Peloton Cellars will pour their award-winning wines accompanied by a special pairing of Windows on The Water appetizers. Peloton Cellars will also donate 10% of sales from their Triple Ring Pinor Noir during the entire month of May to the Bike Coalition.

The resolution, 7-14, accepts the negative declaration for an EIR and NEPA documents allowing for and approving the conditional use and construction permits.

The project will now move forward for final approval by the Coastal Commission before construction. There are no dates for the Coastal Commission meeting yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted!
