Video: Eye Contact

One of the best ways to communicate with motorists while you’re on a bike is to make eye contact. This way you can be sure they see you, and you can let them know what you are doing.

Advocacy Alert

Transportation Funding Press Conference

The future of transportation funding is important for bicycle and pedestrian facilities, for our local economy, for job creation, and many other reasons. Congresswoman Lois Capps is going to be in San Luis Obispo to talk about these issues, and what we can do to ensure the future of biking and walking is not in jeopardy.

WHAT: Transportation Funding Press Conference (w/ Lois Capps)

WHEN: Wednesday, August 31st, 10:30 – 11:00 am

WHERE: Corner of Johnson Ave and Buchon St (map)

WHY: Join us, and various local officials, to discuss the importance of funding infrastructure for creating jobs and boosting our local economy, and how the proposed House Transportation Committee plan would cut funding by 33% and jeopardize construction jobs and transportation improvements in SLO County

Speaking in order
Congresswoman Lois Capps
Jan Marx, Mayor of San Luis Obispo
Adam Hill, Chairman of SLO County Board of Supervisors
Bruce Gibson, Chairman of SLO County Council of Governments/County Supervisor
Dan Rivoire, Executive Director of SLO County Bicycle Coalition

A dancing bear in Denmark cheering on cyclists on their daily ride? GENIUS! We love the spirit of this video, just like we love bikes. Enjoy.

Renew Coalition Memberships

If you haven’t renewed your Coalition membership this year, now is the time to do so! Renewing is easy, and can be done online today here.

Coalition memberships help us get more bike paths built, more safe routes to schools, more bike lanes striped, more people riding bikes, and more visitors to SLO County to be a part of the bike-happy lifestyle we love! The more members we have, the stronger our voice is within our community to make positive change for bicycles and pedestrians in the future!

Our advocacy efforts aim to make riding a bicycle easy and more enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities. With your support, we can continue to be THE voice for bicycles in SLO County, and provide the community with the programs we all know and love.

Consider the $52 household membership level to be an investment in bicycles, at just $1/week it will seriously help continue the Coalition’s momentum into 2012.

Still not convinced? Check out our latest flowchart to see why renewing your Coalition membership is a great investment in the future of bicycles in SLO County. Sign up online here.

We are proud to be your voice for bicycles in SLO County, thanks for your continued support, tell your friends!

2011 SLO GranFondo

The 2nd Annual SLO GranFondo is set for this October! This year’s ride runs along the Central Coast and enables cyclists of all abilities to ride and support ALPHA and the Coalition. We will be receiving a portion of the proceeds from the event this year, and encourage you to invite your friends for this unique Central Coast cycling experience.

The ride offers three routes to accommodate a variety of riders:

  • GranFondo: over 100 miles on a challenging ride from SLO up the northern coast to Piedras Blancas and back
  • MedioFondo: about 50 miles along the same route as the GranFondo, but returns after reaching Cayucos
  • PiccoloFondo: a 25 mile loop through countryside that unfolds onto the Morro Bay estuary

Registration is now open, (registering after September 1st will not secure you a jersey until after the event).

Regardless of your ability level, a GranFondo is an unforgettable cycling experience. The Coalition will be parking bikes in the Mission after the ride and will receive a portion of the proceeds from the event! By riding you can support both ALPHA and the Coalition!
