SLO International Film Festival Screening to Benefit SLO County Bicycle Coalition
We’re excited to announce two great things (Bicycles and Movies) in one great event! This coming Saturday evening (October 25th) the SLO International Film Festival presents a special screening of the film Breaking Away at The Fremont Theatre in SLO. Dennis Christopher and Paul Dooley, who starred in the film, will both be in attendance. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The SLO County Bicycle Coalition.
Dennis Christopher and Paul Dooley will do a Q&A after the movie and will also be at a meet-and-greet reception at Mama’s Meatball in San Luis Obispo, happening 5:00-6:30 pm. The reception includes classic Italian appetizers, wine courtesy of Peloton Cellars, and of course, some Cinzano!
Special thanks to Best Bike Zone, Flanders Bicycle, Paso Bike Tours, Foothill Cyclery, Mama’s Meatball and Peloton Cellars for sponsoring this event!

Tomorrow is May 1st and that means that BIKE MONTH IS HERE!
Rideshare’s Bike Month Kick Off event begins at 7 pm Thursday, May 1st with the screening of a documentary about SLO’s own Bike Happening, at Lincoln Market & Deli. Our free Bike Valet service will be there, ready to park and watch over your favorite two-wheeled friend as you enjoy the festivities.
Never used Bike Valet? It works just like a regular valet service:
You’ll be given given a numbered tag, which matches the tag we attach to your bike.
Your bike will be carefully parked on our secure racks.
To retrieve your bike, hand us your number. We’ll confirm that it matches the number on your bike, then return it.
Boom!
After you watch the Bike Happening film, you may want to…ride in the Bike Happening itself! Maybe, just maybe, you’ll be in the sequel.
Bike Month Kick Off May 1st 7 – 10 pm

The Climate Ride is a fully supported bike ride that features a focus on bicycle advocacy, sustainability, and renewable energy. Help the SLO County Bicycle Coalition team riders by donating to them on their upcoming Climate Ride adventure while also supporting the Bicycle Coalition!
How it works:
Riders register and can join a ‘team’ where they collectively fundraise to support a designated organization – the SLO County Bicycle Coalition. Your donation helps the rider raise funds for their chosen organization and raises awareness as well.

Working on your weekend project is about to get a lot easier!
Since opening our doors in early 2010 we have had over 6,000 people use the Bike Kitchen to wrench on their bicycles, find parts for projects, and learn the art of bicycle maintenance. A lot has evolved in the space since that time with major improvements to our workspace and organization, yet our hours have remained the same, but things are about to change.
We are excited to announce that beginning on Friday February 28, 2014 we will be expanding from 10 to 15 operating hours per week with full weekend days as well. With the new hours we can provide more people with the chance to join us and get their bicycles in tip-top shape.
The long awaited expansion of the Bike Kitchen is largely in part to increased support from our volunteers and members who keep our wheels spinning, a BIG thanks to all of you!
In addition to more open hours we are also introducing a tiered pricing system, allowing for half-day ($5) and full-day ($10) pricing options. Bicycle Coalition members still receive 4 free visits as part of their membership – an incredible deal!
New Bike Kitchen hours as of Friday February 28, 2014*
Fridays 12:00 – 5:00 pm
Saturdays 12:00 – 5:00 pm
Sundays 12:00 – 5:00 pm
*We will be closed on February 26th & 27th in preparation for our new hours.

The following is an excerpt from the Winter 2014 Spoken Wheel, the Bicycle Coalition’s print newsletter.
—
The lifecycle of the Bicycle Coalition is impressive. The community catalyzed passion, passion bred generosity, generosity established success, and success generated investment.
Our persistent focus on community, working to improve local quality of life through a more bicycle friendly Central Coast continues to find great success. The Kitchen, Valet, and Education programs have reached tens of thousands of residents, helping each and every one of them actively recall the joy of riding a bicycle. We are ecstatic to witness our programs help more people find the confidence and develop the skills needed to use a bicycle for everyday transportation. Education and inspiration are essential components of our mission and represent our focus on creating change externally to make our community an even better place to live. Meanwhile, to compliment the strong showing of outward accomplishment, the Coalition never stops working on self-improvement.
Backed by the combined strength of thousands of donors, members, and volunteers we stand at a crossroads. Throughout the last few years, we have often said that the organization was in its late teens or early twenties. We moved out of our parent’s house, Clever Ducks, and found our first apartment, the headquarters in downtown SLO. We learned how to plan strategically, meet our budget goals, and save for the future. We increased our capacity to do good work in the community. We helped local governments plan and build miles upon miles of new, safer bikeways throughout the region. Now, the Bicycle Coalition aims to become an adult. We are committed to reaching every school with safety assemblies, providing smarter services for people needing help with their bicycles, and more important than all, working with local governments to build more bicycle friendly improvements on a faster timeline.
Your incredible support has initiated tremendous accomplishments and organizational growth over the years. Since 2009, the Bicycle Coalition has expanded our staff from one dedicated individual to a team of five. Our annual income has increased an average of 16% every year. We have three times the resources in our reserve so we can remain absolutely confident that the organization will exist for decades to come. Within the next few months, we will hire our first ever Program Director, to manage and further improve our valuable programs. Thanks to the leadership of our Board of Directors, we also take aim at the long-term goal of achieving an impassioned bicycle friendly majority in every decision making body in San Luis Obispo County. We’re looking forward to 2014 and know that your generosity is the key to our every accomplishment.
The community catalyzed passion, passion bred generosity, generosity established success, and success generated investment. Investment expanding the Bicycle Coalition is reflected by increasing government investment in safer streets. Now the community wields power.
See you in the Bike Lane,
Dan Rivoire, Executive Director
