Help us identify potential transportation safety issues (bikes included) within San Luis Obispo! Through The Annual Traffic Safety Program, the City of SLO strives to identify high collision locations and actively pursues corrective measures to improve safety at these locations. The City has developed an interactive map to allow residents to flag locations where they have observed notable transportation safety or mobility concerns. This information will be used to supplement the City’s understanding of potential transportation safety issues and help guide decisions regarding future transportation improvements.

Slowly but surely, roads are becoming safer for cyclists. A new bill went into effect the first day of January 2024, titled California Bill A.B. 1909, which states that bicyclists in the state are now permitted to cross whenever pedestrians are. This is an important development thanks to a technology called Leading Pedestrian Interval, or LPI, which gives walkers a head start on the right-of-way before traffic is allowed to commence. You may have noticed there are many crosswalk signals in San Luis Obispo that allow pedestrians a couple seconds head start before the traffic light turns green for cars. This now applies to cyclists, allowing them the same head start to be more visible, especially to right-turn-on-red motorists. You can read more about the bill here: ... See MoreSee Less
California Cyclists Can Now Cross the Street at the Same Time As Pedestrians. That Matters.
Thanks to the Leading Pedestrian Interval, roads in California got a whole lot safer for bike riders.0 CommentsComment on Facebook
There is a saying in our bike community, "Every Day is Bike Day!" So in the same spirit, "Every Day is Giving Day!" Today, Giving Tuesday, the global generosity movement to encourage giving is upon us, and Bike SLO County would like to invite you to be involved in our movement to serve the community and get more people on bikes.
Giving can come in many ways: advocate for change; share a talent or skill, donate a bike, or provide financial support to strengthen our programs. Everything helps and it is appreciated. We are reaching out on Giving Tuesday to ask for your help in supporting Bike SLO County to bolster our organization serving the community by:
Volunteering - volunteers make our organization stronger. You may have talents you would like to share with others - to help repair a bike, teach a young or older person how to ride a bike, advocate for change to make riding a bike safer in our communities, or help plan fun events.
Give a gift of a bike that is gently used and no longer ridden, so that it can be refurbished by our skilled mechanics and in turn provide the "gift of mobility" to benefit a community member in need. Our RideWell program provides bikes, helmets, lights, locks, and safety education, and it also offers a chance for a healthy, sustainable way of life. Bike donations are accepted at the Bike Kitchen.
Provide a Gift to support our programs like our Bike Education program that travels to schools countywide with our fleet of bicycles to teach more than 750 kids how to bike safely and smartly. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the smile of a child successfully riding for the very first time.
Please consider supporting Bike SLO County by making a generous commitment today of time, talent, or personal giving and making it a Bike Day and Giving Day!

With school back in session, we're saddened to hear from our local community witnessing dangerous cell phone use while driving in school zones, especially during pick up and drop off. Not only is it the law (you aren't allowed to be holding your phone in your hand), but it is extremely important to be mindful of the safety of our community. We get it - it's a hectic time of traffic, trying to get to work and school, juggling phone calls, and all the stress that comes with balancing it all. We implore you all to be mindful of your neighbors, no matter what form of transportation they take. Please keep everyone safe and stay off your cell phone while driving. ... See MoreSee Less
